Dipti Desai is a professor of the arts and art education at New York University. She teaches both pre-service and in-service art teachers. As she watched what was happening in the world of education, she decided to create a graphic to illustrate the “Educational Industrial Complex.” Readers may know that when President Dwight D. Eisenhower was leaving office after his second term, he warned voters to be wary of the “Military Industrial Complex.” Who knew that in 2015 we would have to keep our eyes on the “educational industrial complex,” a combination of corporations, philanthropies, government agencies, and the organizations that promote privatization and high-stakes testing?

In that insight of inter-being, it is possible to have real communication with the Earth, which is the highest form of prayer. In that kind of relationship you have enough love, strength and awakening in order to change your life.

Fear, separation, hate and anger come from the wrong view that you and the Earth are two separate entities, that the Earth is only the environment. That is a dualistic way of seeing.

Graphs for everything?  

Exceptional Delaware, here is a thought for you.  Should we show everything in the form of a graph?  

Last week, I was walking down the hall in my school building and I notice graphs outside classroom doors.  Schedules make sense, but graphs… Printed, in color, and laminated….. graphs at each door, all the same colors….

So, I went in for a closer look and , “o NO,” went through my head.  These are test scores….  No names, or raw scores, but percentages, taller bars to shortest bars, and in different colors.  Green for above. And yellow for below.  Why yellow; that is my favorite color.  And you know m……. the teachers name.  Not on the graph, but on the door so beautifully decorated….

Then i felt really bad, what if this was my door… (I teach art, no graphs for me this year)  I spent time money and effort to invite people to my class and I have a graph with a lot of yellow…….. So I looked at the other graphs.  I would rather be that teacher, over there…..

How many parents, students, visitors see these graphs and think what I just did?  Why are we doing this stuff? And all for what, test scores……

Graphs are NOT for everything and shouldn’t be display anywhere.

The Delaware Senate will be having a meeting on October 28th to consider the nomination of Dr. Steven Godowsky for the role of Secretary of Education in Delaware.  Since October 1st, the role is in an interim capacity.  What questions do you think the Delaware Senate should ask Dr. Godowsky when they meet with him?  Now is the time for the Senate to really dig in and find out not only what he plans to do, but what he won’t do.  We need to find out if Dr. Godowsky is simply there to fulfill Governor Markell’s agenda until the end of his gubernatorial term or if he is truly there for change.  Please place your questions for Dr. Godowsky in the comments section and I will make sure this information gets to the Delaware Senate.  We need Dr. Godowsky to be his own man and not a puppet for the…

This is so Americans today it’s sad. How do we get back to what is truly important?

We have taller buildings but shorter tempers; wider freeways but narrower viewpoints; we spend more but have less; we buy more but enjoy it less; we have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences, yet less time.

We have more degrees but less sense; more knowledge but less judgement; more experts, yet more problems; more gadgets but less satisfaction; more medicine, yet less wellness; we take more vitamins but see fewer results.

We drink too much; smoke too much; spend too recklessly; laugh too little; drive too fast; get too angry quickly; stay up too late; get up too tired; read too seldom; watch TV too much and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values; we fly in faster planes to arrive there quicker, to do less and return sooner; we sign more contracts only to realize fewer profits.

Susan Ochshorn: Let the Children Play

OMG. There is a process to learning; it’s not all about the product….

Susan Ochshorn is an authority on early childhood education. She reports with pleasure that many states and districts are expanding access to pre-kindergarten, but notes with unhappiness that the political leaders who are expanding early childhood education are making a terrible mistake: They are introducing four- and five-year-olds to Common Core and imposing “rigor” on these little ones.

Rigor for 4-year-olds? What about their social-emotional development, which goes hand-in-hand with cognitive skill-building? What about play, the primary engine of human development?

Unfortunately, it seems like we’re subjecting our young children to a misguided experiment.

“Too many educators are introducing inappropriate teaching methods into the youngest grades at the expense of active engagement with hands-on experiences and relationships,” Beverly Falk, author of Defending Childhood told me. “Research tells us that this is the way young children construct understandings, make sense of the world, and develop their interests and desire to learn.”…
